What Sofia is actually like
Bulgaria’s capital is an easy-going mix of Orthodox churches, Roman ruins, Soviet-era buildings and leafy parks, with Vitosha mountain right behind it. It is one of the best-value capitals in Europe. The Rila Monastery, painted inside and out, is a superb day trip.
