What Istanbul is actually like
A city on two continents, split by the Bosphorus. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace are all in the old town, the Grand Bazaar is a short walk away, and a ferry across to Asia costs about a euro. The food is superb, the views are everywhere and the energy is like nowhere else in Europe.
Who Istanbul suits
- First-time city breakers who want the wow factor
- Foodies
- Anyone who has done Paris, Rome and Barcelona and wants something different
Best time to go to Istanbul from Ireland
April, May, September and October are ideal: warm and comfortable for walking. Summer is hot and busy. Winter is grey and wet, but cheap and quiet.

What nobody tells you about Istanbul
- Istanbul has two airports. Check which one you land at: the new Istanbul Airport is a long way out.
- Get an Istanbulkart for trams, metro and ferries. It works for more than one person.
- Mosques close to visitors at prayer times. Cover up, and women bring a scarf.
