A bit milder. Not worth a flight on its own.

Worth the bother?

3/10 I wouldn’t.

“Only 1°C better. Ask yourself if it’s the weather or the trip you’re after. Go for what’s on, not the weather.”

  • 1°C warmer than Ireland’s usual 14°C
  • 5 rainy days a month, against Ireland’s 12
  • 5 hours of sun a day, against 3
  • 3h 30m direct
  • Something’s on this month
  • Fares about 53% above usual for this route
How we work this out

Worth the bother is worked out from the same facts every time: how much warmer, drier and sunnier it usually is there than in Ireland that month, how long the flight is, how good the place is, whether something’s on and, when we have enough fares for the route, whether the month is unusually dear or cheap. We use the usual weather for the month so one freak day can’t swing it. When you tell us what you’re after (snow, Christmas markets, walking and so on), the weather part asks how well the usual weather fits that, not just how warm it is. Nobody can pay to change a score, and plenty of places score low on purpose.

What Chișinău and Moldova is actually like

Most people book Chișinău for the Soviet-era blocks and statues, and they are there. What surprises everyone is how modern the city centre is: leafy boulevards, new cafés and restaurants, and a young, friendly crowd. The food is hearty and very good (try plăcinte, sarmale and mămăligă), and the wine is the real reason to come. Moldova is one big vineyard, and the cellars at Cricova and Mileștii Mici run for tens of kilometres underground; Mileștii Mici holds the world record for the largest wine collection.

What nobody tells you about Chișinău and Moldova

  • Book the Cricova or Mileștii Mici cellar tours in advance; you tour them by car or little train.
  • Taxis are cheap. Use a local ride app or ask your hotel to order one, and agree the price first if you hail one on the street.
  • Pay in Moldovan lei. Cards work in most of the city, but bring cash for markets and wineries.
  • Take a day trip to Orheiul Vechi, a cave monastery above a river gorge, about an hour away.
  • Don't call Moldovan wine 'cheap plonk'. It's cheap, and it's often excellent.
